  • College Football Coach Stock Report: Week 1

College Football Coach Stock Report: Week 1

Which Coach Boosted Their Stock After Week 1? Which Coach Felt Their Seat Get Hotter?

We used to give college football coaches years to determine if they had what it takes. Now, we make drastic judgements on a weekly basis. Which coaches had the best Week 1 and which fell flat?

    STOCK DOWN

    Scott Frost – Nebraska
After blowing yet another lead against Northwestern in Week 0, which included an horrendous onside kick in the 3rd quarter, Nebraska had a poor showing against North Dakota State in Week 1. Frost’s Cornhuskers were tied with FCS ND State at half.

ALSO: Which coaches are in play for a potential coaching search at Nebraska?

    Brian Kelly – LSU
Because it’s LSU, it’s easy to forget that Kelly took over a program that went 6-7 in 2021. But, for those that questioned Kelly’s fit at LSU, their performance against Florida State didn’t quiet things.

    Jeff Brohm – Purdue
Brohm and Purdue had Penn State beat. Purdue’s clock management and the close of this game was brutal. Brohm’s a good coach, but can leave you scratching your head too often.

    Brent Pry – Virginia Tech
It’s going to take time, but what an ugly initiation for Pry at Virginia Tech. An opening season loss to Old Dominion is not the way to endear yourself to the Hokie faithful.

    STOCK UP

    Billy Napier – Florida
Many thought Florida could do better when they hired Napier. That was a solid performance against a tough Utah team. The future looks bright for Florida and Napier.

    Greg Schiano – Rutgers
Their win against Boston College doesn’t move the meter much. If Schiano is leading your team you know they will be competitive. He has quickly raised the standard at Rutgers.

    Mike Elko – Duke
Elko’s team didn’t need much time to come together. They looked ready out of the gate with a complete domination of Temple.

    Kirby Smart – Georgia
How can a coach that just won a national championship raise expectations even higher? I guess with a 49-3 win over #11 Oregon.

  • Top Group of Five Coaches in College Football

Top Group of Five Coaches in College Football

Will These Coaches Soon Land Jobs in the Power 5?

Should an Athletic Director looking to fill a Power 5 head coaching position hire an assistant that has coached in a major conference or someone with head coaching experience at a Group of 5 school? Lately, head coaching experience has been prioritized by these Athletic Directors. Here are the top non-Power 5 head football coaches that could be getting offers from larger schools after this season.

ALSO: College Coaches That Could Be Jumping To The NFL.

    Luke Fickell – Cincinnati
Fickell’s success at Cincinnati has washed away the memories of his 6-7 season at Ohio State. He has turned down big offers already. Is he waiting for a top 5 head coaching job or is Cincinnati’s move to the Big 12 enough to keep him around?

    Hugh Freeze – Liberty
What he’s accomplished at Liberty is impressive. Enough so that Athletic Director’s will be willing to look past the mess he left at Ole Miss.

    Jamey Chadwell – Coastal Carolina
If your Athletic Director is looking for a modern offense, and most of them are, Chadwell will likely be on their list.

    Jeff Monken – Army
Monken wouldn’t be your flashy hire, but if you are looking for a disciplined team, he’s your guy. Monken has been in the mix for Power 5 jobs in the past.

    Jeff Traylor – UTSA
If Traylor produces a 2022 season anything life his 2021 season, he’ll have competition for his services.

    Troy Calhoun – Air Force
Leading Air Force to 10+ win seasons in the past two full seasons will get people’s attention. Calhoun has turned down bigger offers in the past. Is he an Air Force lifer?

  • 2022 Big 12 Football Coach Rankings

2022 Big 12 Football Coach Rankings
The best hair and the best coach in the Big 12

The Big 12 doesn’t having the coaching star power of the SEC, or even the Big Ten. But, there isn’t a bad coach in this league. From top-to-bottom the coaches in the Big 12 know how to get the most out of their teams.

As we kickoff the 2022 season, let’s take a look at the ranking of head coaches in the Big 12. Also, check out our Big 12 Hot Seat Report.

    AVERAGE JOE

    10. Joey McGuire – Texas Tech
McGuire was hired from Baylor. Can he replicate Baylor’s recent success at Texas Tech?

    9. Sonny Dykes – TCU
Dykes comes with plenty of head coaching experience. Taking over for TCU legend, Gary Patterson, won’t be an easy task.

    8. Steve Sarkisian – Texas
The hiring of Sarkisian was met with skepticism. And still is.

    7. Neal Brown – West Virginia
Brown typically has West Virginia in the middle of the conference standings. And, not coincidentally, finds himself in the middle of these rankings.

    6. Brent Venables – Oklahoma
We know Venables can lead a defense. Can he keep up Oklahoma’s high standard?

    5. Lance Leipold – Kansas
Hafley’s record at Boston College isn’t great, but you can see what he is building there.

    4. Chris Klieman – Kansas State
Many miss the fact that Clawson has put together a solid tenure at Wake Forest since 2014 including an ACC championship game appearance in 2021.

    SECOND TIER

    3. Matt Campbell – Iowa State
What Campbell has produced at Iowa State is impressive. He’s already turned down multiple big time offers at other schools, but for how much longer?

    2. Dave Aranda – Baylor
You don’t have to look hard to see that Aranda is a damn good coach. Athletic Directors with big budgets have noticed too.

    TOP TIER

    1. Mike Gundy – Oklahoma State
Championships are the goal. Being in contention yearly is the best you can ask for. And Gundy delivers that.

  • 2022 PAC-12 Football Coach Rankings

    2022 PAC-12 Football Coach Rankings
The Lincoln Riley hire reset the standard for Pac-12 coaching hires.

The Pac-12 has had some recent big-time hires at their premier programs including, Chip Kelly at UCLA and Dan Lanning at Oregon. No hire caused a bigger splash than USC’s shocker bringing Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma.

A few years from now Lincoln Riley will likely still be the head coach at USC, but part of the move to the Big Ten Conference. Will other head coaches in the Pac-12 look elsewhere as the conference struggles to stay relevant?

As we kickoff the 2022 season, let’s take a look at the ranking of head coaches in the Pac-12. Also, check out our Pac-12 Hot Seat Report.

    BOTTOM FEEDERS

    12. Jedd Fisch – Arizona
Fisch had a rough start in 2021 at 1-11. It’s hard to see signs of hope.

    AVERAGE JOE

    11. Jake Dickert – Washington State
Dickert took over a tough situation at Washington State after Nick Rolovich’s firing.

    10. Dan Lanning – Oregon
Lanning was hired to bring the Georgia recipe to Oregon. That’s a big ask.

    9. Karl Dorrell – Colorado
Dorrell’s seat is getting hotter, but his overall head coaching record is not bad at 43-38.

    8. Herm Edwards – Arizona State
The record for Edwards at Arizona State is respectable. But, the off-the-field issues have been a disaster under his leadership.

    7. Jonathan Smith – Oregon State
Smith seems to have Oregon State on a steady upward trajectory.

    6. Justin Wilcox – California
Cal is not an easy place to coach, but Wilcox has his team’s competitive on a yearly basis.

    5. Chip Kelly – UCLA
Hafley’s record at Boston College isn’t great, but you can see what he is building there.

    4. Kalen DeBoer – Washington
DeBoer is already one of the best coaches in the conference. He might be a candidate to leave for a job in a superior conference.

    SECOND TIER

    3. David Shaw – Stanford
Shaw’s star has faded in recent years, but his record at Stanford going into the 2022 season is an impressive 93-45.

    TOP TIER

    2. Lincoln Riley – USC
What he accomplished at Oklahoma was impressive. The future looks bright for Riley and USC, but can Riley elevate USC to the level of Georgia and Alabama?

    1. Kyle Whittingham – Utah
If we ever roll out a list of underrated coaches in college football, Whittingham may top the list.

  • 2022 ACC Football Coach Rankings

    2022 ACC Football Coach Rankings

There are some quality coaches in the ACC, no doubt. But, there is the reality that it’s a significant step down from the level of head coaches in the SEC. And, there’s a possibility some of the coaches at the top of this list will be taking pay raises and heading to the Big Ten or SEC.

As we kickoff the 2022 season, let’s take a look at the ranking of head coaches in the ACC. Also, check out our ACC Hot Seat Report.

    BOTTOM FEEDERS

    14. Geoff Collins – Georgia Tech
We don’t expect Collins to be in this spot next season. Not because he moved up, but moved off the list.

    AVERAGE JOE

    13. Brent Pry – Virginia Tech
Not a great introduction for Pry with a loss to Old Dominion.

    12. Mike Elko – Duke
There are not many defensive coordinators that get head coaching opportunities recently. Duke hired great coordinator. Will it work out as a head coach?

    11. Tony Elliott – Virginia
Elliott patiently waited for his head coaching opportunity and found a program that has had some recent success.

    10. Dino Babers – Syracuse
Babers passed on big offers from other schools after his 10-3 season in 2018. Those offers have washed up and the seat is getting warmer.

    9. Scott Satterfield – Louisville
Satterfield’s failures at Louisville have been exaggerated. But, he may not get much more time at Louisville to prove how good of a coach he is.

    8. Pat Narduzzi – Pitt
Narduzzi is reigning conference champion. Losing Kenny Pickett to the NFL and Jordan Addison to USC will move Pitt back to their middle-of-the-conference position.

    7. Mike Norvell – Florida State
This is a make-or-break year for Norvell with Florida State boosters keeping an eye on alum, Deion Sanders.

    6. Mario Cristobal – Miami
Cristobal didn’t get over the hump during his time at Oregon. Many anticipate a big jump from Miami under Cristobal.

    5. Jeff Hafley – Boston College
Hafley’s record at Boston College isn’t great, but you can see what he is building there.

    4. Dave Clawson – Wake Forest
Many miss the fact that Clawson has put together a solid tenure at Wake Forest since 2014 including an ACC championship game appearance in 2021.

    3. Dave Doeren – North Carolina State
Doeren is one of the more underappreciated coaches. It could be argued he should be in the #2 spot on this list.

    SECOND TIER

    2. Mack Brown – North Carolina
It’s been an impressive career. His second and current act at North Carolina has gone better than expected.

    TOP TIER

    1. Dabo Swinney – Clemson
He’s accomplished more than any other current coach in the ACC and it’s not close.

  • 2022 SEC Football Coach Rankings

    2022 SEC Football Coach Rankings

It’s not a coincidence that the SEC, the most dominant football conference, has the best coaches in the country. It’s also not a coincidence that the best coaches reside in the wealthiest conference.

Let’s take a look at the 2022 Ranking of SEC Football Coaches. Also, check out the 2022 SEC Hot Seat Report.

    BOTTOM FEEDERS

    14. Clark Lea – Vanderbilt
Year 5 of the Scott Frost era appears to be more of the same for Nebraska after a close loss to Northwestern to open the season. It’s hard to see this thing getting turned around.

    13. Eli Drinkwitz – Missouri
He’s just overmatched in the SEC. Actually, the entire university is overmatched in the SEC.

    AVERAGE JOE

    12. Shane Beamer – South Carolina
Beamer is unlikely to find the level of success his father produced, especially battling in the SEC.

    11. Bryan Harsin – Auburn
An odd spot for a coach that might not make it through the season. He’s a solid coach in a bad fit.

    10. Josh Heupel – Tennessee
Tennessee needs to make the kind of noise during the season that they do in the off-season.

    9. Mike Leach – Mississippi State
College football needs Mike Leach. He’ll hang around .500 in the conference with a few overachieving seasons mixed in.

    8. Brian Kelly – LSU
His contract tells us he should be ranked higher. We believe we’ll quickly see Kelly is overmatched in the SEC.

    7. Sam Pittman – Arkansas
We’ll admit, he’s exceeding our expectations. Pittman specializes in maximizing talent.

    6. Lane Kiffin – Ole Miss
Kiffin seems to be getting with age (and maturity). He has Ole Miss competitive yearly.

    5. Jimbo Fisher – Texas A&M
A heck of a recruiter, yes. Outside of that? He often gets less out of more.

    4. Billy Napier – Florida
He’s a rookie SEC head coach. But, you’ll soon see why he’s near the top of the list as Florida regains it’s position as a SEC power.

    3. Mark Stoops – Kentucky
What Stoops has accomplished at Kentucky, a basketball school, is too often overlooked.

    TOP TIER

    2. Kirby Smart – Georgia
Smart has built a monster at Georgia. He just needs to maintain that success for another 15 years to catch Saban.

    1. Nick Saban – Alabama
I don’t know what could move Saban off this position other than retirement. Maybe commit a felony? A lifetime jail sentence?

  • 2022 Big Ten Football Coach Rankings

2022 Big Ten Football Coach Rankings
Ryan Day tops the rankings of big ten football coaches.
Ryan Day looking down at the rest of the coaches in his conference?

The Big Ten is not a conference short on quality coaches. And it’s only going to get better with additional TV money heading to the conference. And you’ll soon add USC (Lincoln Riley) and UCLA (Chip Kelly) to the mix.

Let’s take a look at the 2022 Ranking of Big Ten Football Coaches. Also, check out the 2022 Big Ten Hot Seat Report.

    BOTTOM FEEDERS

    14. Scott Frost Nebraska
Year 5 of the Scott Frost era appears to be more of the same for Nebraska after a close loss to Northwestern to open the season. It’s hard to see this thing getting turned around.

    13. Tom Allen – Indiana
Allen is heading into Year 7 at Indiana. Things looked to be trending up after the 2019 and 2020 seasons. But 2-10 last season with not a lot of hope for this season.

    AVERAGE JOE

    12. Mike Locksley – Maryland
Locksley has done some nice things in 3 seasons at Maryland, but he’s 13-23 over that period. This is a big season that could determine the direction of Maryland under Locksley.

    11. Brett Bielema – Illinois
Will Illinois get the Wisconsin version of Bielema of the Arkansas version of Bielema?

    10. Greg Schiano – Rutgers
Schiano took Rutgers from 3 wins in 2020 to 5 wins in 2021. Can he continue the upward trend?

    9. Pat Fitzgerald – Northwestern
I know this ranking will raise some eyebrows. But, is there anyone that gets more free passes than Fitzgerald? Great coaches don’t have multiple 3-9 seasons.

    8. Jeff Brohm – Purdue
We’ve been waiting for Brohm and Purdue to make a big leap, but it hasn’t happened yet. Purdue finished second in the Big Ten West last season and is a darkhorse to win the division this year.

    7. Kirk Ferentz – Iowa
Ferentz is just fine in the middle of the conference with his stingy defenses and 1960 offense.

    6. Paul Chryst – Wisconsin
A solid record at 65-23, but it feels like the window for Wisconsin to compete for Big Ten championships under Chryst is closing.

    5. PJ Fleck – Minnesota
You don’t have to love his personality to like what Fleck consistently gets out of his teams.

    4. Jim Harbaugh – Michigan
Yes, there was last season. But, Harbaugh was one season away from possibly being let go by his alma mater.

    3. Mel Tucker – Michigan State
Tucker’s new contract would say he’s one of the Big Ten’s best. We’ll have to see if he can maintain the high standards over multiple seasons.

    2. James Franklin – Penn State
Franklin’s name comes up for many of the big time openings because he’s a high-end coach.

    TOP TIER

    1. Ryan Day – Ohio State
Assistants taking over for successful head coaches doesn’t usually work out. We’ve been waiting for the decline under Day, but it hasn’t happened. He has the Ohio State machine rolling at full speed.
